Software That Goes Against the Grain
Most software today follows the same playbook: collect your data, lock you into a subscription, serve you ads, and hope you forget to cancel. We think there’s a better way.
Subversive Software builds native Mac apps that put you in control. We go against the grain — not for the sake of being contrarian, but because we think the current model isn’t working for the people who use the software. Our logo is a seedling pushing through stone: new ideas growing through established ground.
What We Believe
People are smart. Given good information, people make good choices. Our tools show you what’s happening — on your network, in your system configuration, in your spending — and let you decide what to do about it. We don’t hide complexity behind “trust us.”
Not everything belongs in the cloud. Your security scan results, your financial documents, your consumption data — these don’t need to live on someone else’s server. Our apps store data locally, encrypted at rest, with no accounts and no cloud dependencies.
Software should be open source. You should be able to see what your tools are doing. All of our apps are source-available on GitHub. Read the code, build it yourself, suggest changes.
Software should also be paid for. Open source doesn’t mean free-as-in-no-one-gets-paid. Committed maintainers make software better over time. We believe in a model where people pay for tools they value and get sustained development in return — not a model where you’re the product.
AI can help humans, not just corporations. AI is powerful when it runs on your machine, reading your documents, surfacing your insights — without sending your data to an ad network. We use AI to make native apps smarter: extracting data from your bills, detecting security anomalies, summarizing what matters. On-device by default.
The attention economy is toxic. Monetizing attention through ads and surveillance creates software that’s designed to distract and addict. We don’t run ads. We don’t track you. We don’t have engagement metrics. Our incentive is to make tools you find useful, not tools you can’t put down.
Subscriptions favor producers, not users. Most subscriptions go unused. The model is built on people forgetting to cancel. We ship one-time downloads — a DMG you install and own. Updates are free. If you stop using the app, you stop paying nothing because you already stopped paying.
Data should be protected by default. Not as a premium feature. Not behind a settings toggle. Encrypted at rest, keys in the Keychain, no telemetry. This is baseline, not a selling point.
Small is a feature. Subversive Software is intentionally small. No investors, no growth targets, no pressure to ship features nobody asked for. We make thought-provoking software that does its job well and stays out of your way.
The Software
We build native security tools, privacy tools, productivity tools, and personal finance tools. Every app is built with data protection and privacy by design.
